NZSL Level 1A

This is a beginner class – so even if you don’t know anything about Sign Language, this is a great place to start! In this class we go through Deaf culture and Deaf awareness and start teaching the basics – like “Hello” “Kia Ora” and “How are you” – plus many more!

A little about your tutor:

"Kia ora,

My name is Amber, and I am a fully fluent native user of NZSL. Allow me to introduce myself and share a bit of my background with you.

I was born and raised in Hokianga, in Far North New Zealand, and attended Okaihau College and Kelston Girls College in Auckland (formerly Kelston Girls High School). During my time at Kelston, at the age of 15, I discovered my Deaf identity and began to learn both NZSL and Deaf culture. Since then, I have been actively involved in the Deaf community for over 23 years.

As a mother of two teenage Deaf sons, Kaiden and Ryley, who also use NZSL as their primary language, I developed a passion for working in the Deaf education sector. In 2013, I began my journey in this field, which led me to qualify as an NZSL tutor through Victoria University in 2015. With a deep desire to give back to the community and a love for teaching, I founded NZSL4U in Wellington in November 2016 after passing my papers.

I enjoy sipping a good coffee in the sun in my free time, and sometimes I indulge in a craft beer. Thank you for taking the time to get to know me better."

This class is fully ONLINE.  A stable internet connection and a computer device is required in order to attend.
